World Population:
Rain Forest Acres Lost*
Species Extinctions*
*since Jan 1, 2000

How the numbers are determined:
The World Population clock is derived from US Census Bureau data, projecting population growth based on recent census estimates. The Rain Forest Acres Lost clock is based on recent scientific estimates, using satellite imagery, that approximately 38 million acres of rain forest land will be destroyed this year. The Species Extinction clock is a moderate estimate that approximately 100 species are lost each day (scientific estimates range from 20 to 200 species extinctions per day, with most estimates in the 100/day range)
